OLD OAKLAND/BERKELEY —
Cupcakin’ Bake Shop will open a branch of its popular Berkeley-based bakery in Swan’s Market at 538 9th Street. It will also open a location at 1690 Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley in the former Virginia Bakery, and relocate its Berkeley flagship from Durant Avenue to 2391 Telegraph Avenue.
POTRERO HILL — Vegan burger chain
Next Level Burgeris bringing its meat-free items to a retail space within the Potrero Hill Whole Foods location.
OUTER RICHMOND — A business called
Bao Bao Noodle Bar will replace what’s been Shanghai Dumpling King, which has closed. Another location of Shanghai Dumpling King remains open at 696 Monterey Boulevard.
WESTFIELD CENTRE — The mall is getting a new location of
Hot Spud, which operates a location in Fisherman’s Wharf serving baked potatoes. Expect it to open sometime this winter, a sign indicates.
NORTH BEACH —
Eco Terreno Wineswill open a wine tasting room and restaurant at what was previously comedy club and venue Doc’s Lab.
INNER RICHMOND — A trio of Atelier Crenn alums are planning a bakery to highlight savory and sweet Asian American treats at 1408 Clement in the former Heartbaker space.
Breadbelly, as their so-far pop-up and delivery business is called, will open this fall.
SOMA — Virgin Hotels SF is coming to SoMa, and bringing with it a rooftop bar and a restaurant from former Quince chef de cuisine Adrian Garcia called the
Commons Club sometime this fall.
MARINA — The Marina hasn’t yet got its fill of poke, apparently, and a new poke restaurant called simply
Poke is looking ready to open at 3251 Pierce Street.
MISSION BAY —
Troya Mediterranean Kitchen is expanding from Pac Heights with a location at 214 Tonwsend Street, taking over the former Primo Patio Cafe space.
—A new restaurant serving some of the the area’s oldest indigenous foods,
Café Ohlone by mak-‘amham, will open in September at 2430 Bancroft Way in the back patio area of University Press Books. The project, from co-founders Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino, will serve seasonal Ohlone foods — seed cakes, meat like rabbit, duck, salmon, and venison, plus tea with ingredients like yerba buena — three days a week.
SOMA — Former Alexander’s executive chef Marc Zimmerman is planning a wagyu beef focused restaurant called
Gozu at an as-yet undisclosed SoMa location.
Mendocino Farms, an ironically Southern California based chain of sandwich shops, is opening at a large, 5,882-square foot location in San Francisco at 465 California Street.
Alcalá, a new restaurant from Berkeley’s popular La Marcha, will open in 2019 in the Oakland hills neighborhood of Montclair sometime in 2019.
COW HOLLOW — A restaurant in the former Lasan Indian Cuisine space has secured a Type 41 beer and wine license for an eating establishment by the name of
NORTH BEACH — A business called
Miki Ramen at 620 Broadway will replace the shuttered Mayan eatery Panuchos. A timeline for its opening isn’t clear.
INNER RICHMOND — 832 Clement, formerly Grindz Hawaiian eatery, will become
Lovessy, an Asian-fusion restaurant with souffles and more.
EAST OAKLAND —
Pho King Restaurantis moving into the Lucky Supermarket Plaza near Lake Merritt at 207 E 18th Street, occupying the former Merritt Bakery space. When it opens in August, it will replace the existing International Boulevard location of the pho restaurant.
INNER RICHMOND — A pop-up called
Breadbelly SF is reportedly on its way to a permanent home at 1408 Clement Street, the former Heartbaker bakery site.
NORTH BEACH —
Palermo II Delicatessen, the reincarnation of a family owned Italian deli that previously operated nearby (until 2008), is almost ready to open at 658 Vallejo
CHINATOWN — A new bubble tea shop called
Boba Buttis coming to 714 Kearny Street. The owner says he let his children name the place, which is now hiring.
MISSION — 819 Valencia Street, formerly a location of Osha Thai, will become something called the
Brew Coop. Little more is known.
SAINT HELENA — Gott’s Roadside owner, winemaker Joel Gott, is opening a market called
the Station in the retail portion of Napa Valley Petroleum (1153 Main Street).
LOWER HAIGHT — A restaurant called
Kibatsu is headed to the former Lodge space at 400 Haight Street.
FISHERMAN’S WHARF — A new business called
Fire & Brew is headed to 81 Jefferson Street, but details about it are scant so far.
COW HOLLOW — A new bar called
White Rabbit is opening in the former Matrix space at 3138 Fillmore Street. It’s from the same folks — the PlumpJack Group.
UNION SQUARE —
Hashida Sushiwill open in August, expanding from Tokyo into a space in the Hotel Abri.
INNER SUNSET —
Tartine looks to be expanding with an intriguing new lease in the Inner Sunset at 1225 9th Avenue. The business won’t say what it might be up to there, so stay tuned.
Luke’s Lobster, a New York-founded chain with 29 locations, will open at 92 Second Street in SoMa this Fall. It’s the first of what could be a whole school of California locations.
The Melt is moving in on 455 Market Street, its third SF Location for grilled cheese sandwiches and more.
NORTH BEACH — A business by the name of
MISSION — Something called
Gourmonade is apparently opening a window in the former flower shop kiosk in the Sutter Health building at 899 Valencia. Wonder what they’ll sell.
— ALX Gastropub, a new, casual spinoff of Alexander’s Steakhouse, is in the works for 680 Folsom Street (between Third and Hawthorne). The chef will be Jessie Lugo, who brings her experience at Alexander’s to the new restaurant.
LOWER PAC HEIGHTS — A new ice cream shop called
Fillmore Street Creamerywill reportedly open at 840 Fillmore Street with a variety of homemade gelato and sorbetto. Another location is in the plans for 1 Franklin Street.
Shabu House, a location of the chain Japanese Eatery, is opening at 1050 Valencia (at Hill Street between 21st and 22nd Streets).
ALAMO SQUARE — Divisadero will get a dose of
Loving Cup, the blended-to-order frozen yogurt shop. The sixth of the chain’s locations, it will open at 608 Divisadero (between Hayes and Grove Streets).
SOMA — The Metreon is set to become the first US home of
Tsuta, a Tokyo-based ramen restaurant that was that city’s first to receive a Michelin star.
Palace of Spices, a 300-seat Indian buffet restaurant from the owner of Gorkha Kitchen at 9th and Judah, will open at 173 Eddy.
TEMESCAL — A new Temescal beer hall, going by the name
Bierhaus and seemingly from the owners of a Mountain View restaurant of the same name, is reportedly headed to 364 40th Street.
WEST OAKLAND —
Soba Ichi, a new restaurant from the Ippuku team focused on making soba noodles from scratch, is opening in what was once Fusebox at 2311A Magnolia Street.
SOMA — A popular Peninsula spot for Israeli food including hummus,
Oren’s Hummus, is opening in San Francisco at 71 Third Street in mid-July.
UNION SQUARE — Claude Le Tohic, a James Beard award winning chef, has four businesses bound for a massive new project called >ONE65

Halal Guys’ next stop is the former Plum Bar/Locol space in Uptown Oakland
Zino, a new Mediterranean restaurant, will replace Five at 2086 Allston Way. Chef Brandon Hicks is behind the new menu, and the restaurant opens after June 18.
FIDI — A new bar from the Bourbon and Branch/Future Bars group is bound for the Claude Lane space recently vacated by the restaurant Gitane after 11 years.
OAKLAND — Temescal’s Lanesplitter Pizza Location will become an
Artichoke Basille’s branch this fall as its owners focus on their other locations
Tammy’s Chicken In Waffles, a food cart known for its chicken baked right into waffle batter, is getting ready to open a permanent location near the Cal campus.
OAKLAND — Chinatown is getting a new boba shop called
OneZo, whose concoctions feature Pokémon-inspired boba. The address of the shop will be 362 8th Street.
COW HOLLOW —
Cow Marlowe, which is exactly the Cow Hollow version of Marlowe it sounds like it would be, is opening in the now-closed Eastside West at 3145 Fillmore Street in September
OAKLAND — Temescal’s former Pain Shop space will become a wine bar called
Prima Materia, presumably serving wine from the Lake County winery of the same name.
SAN RAMON — Charles Phan plans to open a new location of
The Slanted Door at the City Center Bishop Ranch in San Ramon. That development will open in the fall if all goes according to plan.
FIDI — A second SF location of
Sajj Mediterranean Grill is planned for 88 Belden Place in the Financial District. Other locations of the chain are in Mountain View and Sunnyvale.
Barnzu, a restaurant for Korean small plates, has only been open for 7 months but is already plotting its expansion to the former Lafayette Coffee Shop Space at 250 Hyde.
FISHERMAN’S WHARF —
Supreme Crabis taking over the former Joe’s Crab Shack location at 245 Jefferson Street, but not much about the project is known.
Boichik Bagels, a pop-up bagel operation that’s been gaining steam in the East Bay, will open for good in the former home of the first Noah’s New York Bagels. Expect that sometime late this year.
INNER RICHMOND — Hong Kong-style tea restaurant (cha chaan teng) called
Venus Cafe is opening in the former space of Wei Lee Chinese Food & Donuts, offering both traditional and Western dishes like French toast.
SOMA — A bar and restaurant dedicated to Giants nostalgia, called
Pine Tar Bar and Grill, is opening in what was previously Codeword and DNA Pizza. It’ll have cocktails, beer, wine, and “upscale comfort food.”
Halftime Sports Bar, a dedicated Warriors spot, is expanding from downtown Oakland to Temescal. It’s going into the Urbano Latino space on Telegraph.
OAKLAND — Temescal is receiving an all-day restaurant and bar in the former Marc 49 space on Telegraph.
North Light will bring breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffe, and cocktails to the neighborhood, plus a patio.
MISSION BAY —
Stagecoach Greens is rolling into Mission Bay this summer, bringing beer, cocktails, and putt-putt golf to Fourth Street. Food trucks will provide the snacks.
MENLO PARK —
Camper, a new restaurant from chef-partner Greg Kuzia-Carmel, partner Logan Levant of LA’s Buttercream Bakery, and Roland Passot’s dining group is bound for Menlo Park.

What the Cluck, a Thai-style chicken restaurant, is on its way to 1782 Haight Street.
MARINA — The folks behind Biergarten are on their way to Fort Mason, bringing a new beer hall called
Radhaus to the historic former military site.
Moon Gate, a new upstairs lounge with dumplings and drinks, is almost ready above Mister Jiu’s.
MISSION BAY — A new beer garden and mini golf course from nearby SPARK Social is headed into an empty lot in developing Mission Bay, to be called
Mr. East Kitchenis bound for 276 5th Street, where it will serve breakfast fare and food with Vietnamese influences.
RUSSIAN HILL — Mac and cheese purveyor
MAC’D, known for their customizable mac and cheese bowls in the Marina, is opening in Russian Hill at an undisclosed second location.
UPTOWN OAKLAND —
Hello Stranger, a new nightclub and lounge, is on its way to Uptown Oakland, opening at 1724 Broadway (right above the 19th Street BART station).
JACK LONDON SQUARE —
Farmhouse Thai is opening a new location in Jack London Square, building on its popularity in San Francisco. The space is the former Jack’s Oyster Bar.

Yo Tambien is moving into the former Wooly Pig space with “tropical-local” vibes and Venezuelan-Californian food from wife-and-wife team Isabella Bertorelli and Kenzie Benesh.

DOGPATCH — Traci Des Jardins’ new, weeknight-only bar, appropriately called
School Night, is due to open soon at the Dogpatch event space The Pearl.
CASTRO — Beloved brunch spot Kitchen Story, whose Millionaire’s bacon draws regular lines, is expanding with
Dessert Story for sweets next door. That’s to be located in what was formerly Ike’s Place at 3489 16th Street.
DOGPATCH — First-time restaurateur and chef Heena Patel, a La Cocina alum, is taking over the Alta MSP space from veteran chef Daniel Patterson’s Alta Group to realize her vision for a Gujarati/Californian restaurant,
Besharam, which translates to “shameless.” She’ll be open in the 1275 Minnesota Street space as soon as next month.
UNION SQUARE — A restaurant called
Spice Kitchen is apparently taking over the 432 Sutter Street Space that was previously a location of Osha Thai.
Hollywood Caféis bound for 1545 Fillmore in the former Won Mi Korean BBQ Space. The newcomer appears to be a restaurant for breakfast and brunch with pancakes and omelets, plus Korean food like bibimbap and kimchi fried rice, and even innovations like “nacho chili pizza.”
NOE VALEY —
Douglas, a new market at 1598 Sanchez Street (at 29th Street) is headed in with cooking supplies, wine, and more foodstuffs.
MISSION — SoCal roaster
Klatch Coffeeis opening a NorCal location at 2567 Mission Street (at 22nd Street), with another SF location on the way as well.
BOHO, a new restaurant at 3321 Steiner, is opening in April for an eclectic menu from a chef with experience at Absinthe and Cavallo Point.
Schoolnight, a weeknight-only bar in the Pearl event space, is in the works from Traci Des Jardins and her bar director at Arguello, Enrique Sanchez.
Dancing Yakis bound for the former Babu Ji space on Valencia, where it will arrive soon with Nepali cuisine and drinks.
The Butcher’s Son, a vegan restaurant, is opening in the former Maker’s Common space at 1954 University Ave.
Roam Artisan Burgersis headed to 1951 Telegraph Avenue where it will open soon with the creative burgers and shakes for which its other locations are already known.
Chocolate Chair, a growing dessert chain, is bringing its Dragon’s Breath liquid nitrogen balls and more treats to Chinatown at 730 Grant Avenue. That’s on top of existing Union Square and Westfield Centre locations, plus another headed to the Castro.
SOMA — A fine dining and fine art restaurant/gallery called
Palette is bound for 155 12th Street from chef/artist Peter Hemsley, who has worked at Quince.
MISSION BAY — Taiwanese shaved snow shop
Powderis opening its second location in the city at Spark Social, 601 Mission Bay Boulevard North. An exact opening date isn’t yet clear.
Mixt is headed to the former La Rondalla space on Valencia, bringing a “salad lounge” and more.
NORTH BEACH —
Lush Gelatowill take over the space recently ceded by Gelateria Nia at 520 Columbus Avenue. It’s not clear when the newcomer will take the reigns.
FIDI — 357 Kearny Street, formerly the Harrow space, will become
Freshroll Vietnamese Rolls & Bowls, the third of that chain.
Project Juice is coming to cleanse the Marina, but doesn’t yet have an opening date for its healthy juices, bowls, and smoothies. It will take on the space at 2234 Chestnut, formerly La Panotiq Bakery and Café.
CASTRO — Palo Alto-based Indonesian eatery
Indo Restaurantis opening a new location at 18th and Hartford in the Castro, taking over the space that was formerly home to Mekong Kitchen. It’s expected to debut on March 15th. Dishes include spicy coconut fried rice (with shrimp, peas, carrots, cabbage and pickled onions), lamb korma, and chicken satay.
GHIRARDELLI SQUARE — Dim sum from the Koi Palace folks is headed to the former Waxman’s space in Ghirardelli square. The offshoot of the Daly City-based restaurant will be called
Palette, and is in the early planning stages.
Wooly Pig Cafe is relocating its Inner Sunset sandwich oasis to Dogpatch, where it will eventually reopen at 2295 Third Street (at 20th Street) in the former Dogpatch Cafe space.
SAN JOSE — The estimated arrival isn’t before 2020, but a
Chick Fil-A, and a
Trader Vic’s location are headed to the San Jose airport, making SFO and OAK jealous, no doubt.
SANTA ROSA — A specialty market and restaurant from two native Santa Rosans is on the way to 208 Davis Street. It’s called
Miracle Plum, and it will feature homemade jams and grab-and-go foods.
JACKSON SQUARE —
Nico gave up its Michelin Star when it decided to leave Laurel Heights and take a break before relocating to Jackson Square. The restaurant, led by Andrea Delaroque and chef Nicolas Delaroque, will be ready in the former Bocadillos space in early April.
NORTH BEACH — The Il Casaro people are opening a new restaurant in the former Panta Rei space, and it’s going to be a Roman-style pinsa and pizza restaurant called
Barbara Pinseria & Cocktail Bar with a dine-in and a to-go component.
FILLMORE — John Litz, a co-founder of Lazy Bear, is opening an unrelated restaurant in the 2001 Fillmore Space that was most recently Thai Stick. More details to come.
Eat Sushi is reportedly opening with its on-the-nose name at 1516 Folsom Street, a space that’s changed concepts several times. No word on timing.
ST. HELENA — Napa microbrewer
Mad Fritz has a new taproom headed to downtown St. Helena, probably in April. The brewery makes small quantities of beer from locally-grown ingredients.
Cocosuenois opening under the dome in the Westfield Centre, bringing the popular margaritas and Mexican food of nearby Tropisueno to a second location.
MARINA — A new higher-end Starbucks offering,
Starbucks Reserve, is almost ready to open for an elevated, curated, yada yada experience at 1889 Union Street. It will provide an alternative for those who don’t wish to shop at the original, low-end Starbucks that’s literally next door. The first SF Starbucks Reserve to open is downtown on Mission Street.
BAYVIEW — Two brothers, Olton and Dade Rensch, are opening
Tallio’s Coffee & Tea sometime this spring. The location will be 4912 Third Street: It was formerly the Bayview Barber College.
OAKLAND — Brothers Daniel and Samuel Kang along with their parents are opening
Dosirak Shop at 366 Grand Avenue, bringing a new Korean food option to Oakland’s Adam’s Point neighborhood.
Piri Picais coming to the former Frjtz location on Valencia Street, with Portuguese fast-casual dishes centered on piri piri chicken from the chef behind Uma Casa.
JACK LONDON SQUARE — Reem Assil is expanding from her Fruitvale bakery with a restaurant in the former Haven space, partnering with Daniel Patterson. The new restaurant will be called
TENDERLOIN — The team behind Papito is bringing
Papi’s, a fast-casual Mexican restaurant, to the former Huxley space in the Tenderloin. That will open at 846 Geary in early March.
CASTRO — In a naming coincidence, a bar and restaurant called
Papi Rico is headed to the Castro at 544 Castro Street in the old Dante’s Table space, seeking to channel the vibes of Puerto Vallarta’s gay bar scene.
Poke Delishis taking on a space at 708 Kearny, after departing the Myriad Food Hall which is closing on Market Street.
COW HOLLOW — Dominique’s Crenn’s eagerly awaited wine bar,
Bar Crenn, is opening on March 13 next to her flagship restaurant Atelier Crenn.
CIVIC CENTER — Boba Guys and Sunday Bird are opening in SF’S Asian Art Museum with a venture called
Sunday at the Museum. They’re targeting a March 16th opening date.
Gran Electrica, a spinoff of a popular Brooklyn Mexican restaurant, is opening a offshoot in downtown Napa at 1313 Main Street.
TEMESECAL — Japantown ramen shop
Marufuku will add an East Bay sibling, opening in Temescal at 4828 Telegraph Avenue on February 28.
Souvla, the Greek fast casual chain that’s taken the city by storm, is opening next in the Marina on Chestnut Street. An exact date for the opening isn’t yet clear
MISSION — Anthony Strong, formerly of Locanda and the pop-up Young Fava, is opening in the former Hog & Rocks Space, though he’s not sharing a name or the direction, exactly, of the forthcoming restaurant,
The Tamale Lady’s brick and mortar is (still) on the way to 2943 16th Street, though construction delays have slowed progress. The popular roaming tamale operation from Virigina Ramos is expected in the spring. In the meantime, she was seen selling her wares at The Lucky Horseshoe on Cortland this weekend.
LOWER HAIGHT — 262 Divisadero Street coffee shop space, formerly Repose, will be
Native Twins Coffee after a remodel. It’s from two local twins who have already created a line of granola.
Blue Nile Ethiopian is coming to Lakeside at 160 14th Street. An opening timeline isn’t clear.
COW HOLLOW —
Shake Shack is eyeing a location in the former Real Foods market space at Fillmore and Filbert. It hopes to open there early next year, marking the first SF location of the popular burger chain.
Tasty Phở wishes to bring food true to its name to 200 International Blvd in the former New King restaurant space.
Cento Osteria, from chef Donato Scotti and partner Gianluca Guglielmi (Donato & Co. in Berkeley and the now-closed Oakland Desco), is opening for Italian cuisine at 1000 Brannan Street as soon as April.
Matcha Café Maiko is bringing matcha soft serve and many other matcha-based products to Japantown. An opening February is expected.
Duke’s Common, a collaboration between Duke’s Spirited Cocktails and chef Shane McAnelly of local restaurants including The Brass Rabbi, is opening sometime next month, providing much-needed late night bites to the neighborhood.
Bake Cheese Tart, the first US location of a Hokkaido-based business, is headed to the Westfield Centre, where it will take over from a former Peet’s Coffee location. Their specialty: Cream cheese mousse-filled tarts.
Beehive, from chef-owner Phil West of Range and his partners at the Treasury, will open in February or thereabouts in the former Range space at 842 Valencia with a mid-century sensibility.
JACKSON SQUARE — Michael and Lindsay Tusk of Quince and Cotogna are opening
Verjus at 528-555 Washington Street sometime this spring, serving an all-day menu of French cuisine with produce from their Fresh Run Farm in Bolinas.
UNION SQUARE —
Tartine is working on a project, details of which are scant, for the Hotel G. in Union Square. Stay tuned as they replace original plans, now scuttled, that included the April Bloomfield and Ken Friedman team.
The Rake, a taproom from the state’s first craft malthouse since prohibition, is opening on Alameda Island. It will pour 20 beers made with Admiral Maltings’ new malt, and serve food to match.
UNION SQAURE —
Gong Cha, a new bubble tea business is on its way to 272 O’Farrell Street between Mason and Powell.
Stay Gold Deli is preparing to open in Temescal, an expansion from the popular barbecue and deli restaurant’s West Oakland location.
Augie’s Montreal Deli, which was previously a pop-up known as Augie’s Smoke Meat, is opening in Berkeley for Montreal-style beef ribs, smoked meat sandwiches, rye bread, potato latkes, and poutine. To prove its Canadian bona fides, it’ll screen hockey games.
SFO — SF dining all stars Pim Techamuanvivit of Kin Khao, Gabriela Cámara of Cala, and Elisabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson of Tartine are opening a big group venture in SFO’s International Terminal this summer, to be called
Manufactory Food Hall.
PALO ALTO —
The Chickery, a DC chicken chain, is on its way to Palo Alto, where it will open at 3850 El Camino Real for all kinds of chicken this January.
Churn Urban Creamery will go from pop-up to brick-and-mortar operation in the Portola. The ice cream make, Rica Sunga-Kwan, sources ingredients from her own garden and makes dairy as well as non-dairy flavors. She’ll open inside the Avenue theater space in late spring.
LIVERMORE — Tartine and Outerlands vets Bill Niles and Sarah Niles are settling down with a new restaurant in Livermore to be called
Range Life. It could open as soon as February.
JACK LONDON SQUARE —
Elbo Room is opening a new space in Jack London Square in the former Night Light space, and like the beloved Mission location, it will be a bar and lounge below with a performance space above.
WALNUT CREEK —
Pokeatery, a poke restaurant with locations in San Mateo and Castro Valley as well as Austin, Texas, is opening next in Walnut creek by the end of the year. Expect bowls, poke avocado toast, and dole whip floats at 1345 Newell Ave. Suite B.
Park Gyros Castro is opening in the recently-shuttered Slider’s Diner space at 449 Castro Street sometime early next year. The new Mediterranean restaurant is owned by Ali Yaldiz, who operates Tuba Authentic Turkish Restaurant in the Mission and an Inner Sunset location of Park Gyros.
UNION SQUARE —
August Hall and
Fifth Arrow are planning to open this spring in the former Ruby Skye/Slide space at 420 Mason Street. They’re a concert venue and its assosciated downstairs bar and kitchen with a gaming parlor featuring a small bowling alley.
Stockhome, a new, counter-service restaurant from the couple behind PLÄJ in Hayes Valley, is opening in Petaluma for Swedish street food, much of it with Turkish influences.
Birdsong, a restaurant from former Atelier Crenn chef de cuisine Chris Bleidorn and inspired by the Pacific Northwest, is getting ready to open early next year in the former AQ space.
MID-MARKET — The current but soon-to-be former Alta space on Mid-Market will become >Kaya
>Kaya, a partnership between Nigel Jones of Kingston 11 in Oakland and Daniel Patterson, who will move his original Alta location down the street. Kaya is slated to open in mid-January.
EMBARCADERO — Saisons’s horizons are expanding as the restaurant, which boasts three Michelin stars, opens a new, more casual eatery in the former Chaya space. The restaurant, a raw bar and grill, will be called
Angler, and it will have a twin in Los Angeles at the Beverly Center.
True Laurel, a bar from the Lazy Bear team, is gearing up to open with a cocktail tasting menu at 753 Alabama Street. The idea is for a restaurant vibe during dinner that morphs into a bar later in the evening.
RUSSIAN HILL —
Philzwants to open a 14th store in San Francisco, this one in the former Russian Hill Bookstore on Polk Street. Because it’s formula retail, though, it would require special dispensation from the neighborhood.
Vive La Tarte is stationing an outpost at the Ferry Building, where it will serve more stuffed croissants and traditional pastries plus salads and sandwiches. A January opening is in the works.

UPPER HAIGHT — Mediterranean pizzeria
Bizzais opening at 1463 Haight Street to address the area’s munchies issues with pizza, calzones, wings, and fusion items like falafel pizza.
POTRERO HILL —
Truly Mediterranean, whose falafel and kebabs have been a hit with Missionites since 1992, is expanding from 16th Street to a Potrero Hill spot at 1010 Potrero Avenue (at 22nd Street). The new location is expected to open early in the new year.
SOUTH BEACH —
Proper Food is expanding still with its 9th SF location for work-friendly lunch at 2 Embarcadero Center. It’s coming soon with Monday to Friday hours from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
MISSION — Morgan Schick and Josh Harris, the Bon Vivants of BV Hospitality, are setting off on their next adventure with a new cocktail bar,
Bon Voyage. The space (at 584 Valencia) has been empty for some time, and was formerly Urchin Bistrot. Like their previous bar, Trick Dog, the duo hopes to make Bon Voyage “fun and full of energy” when it opens, perhaps in February.
RUSSIAN HILL —
Philz Coffee aims to take over the now-closed Russian Hill Bookstore space on Polk Street, filing the necessary paper work with the city. Stay tuned to see how the now sizable coffee chain fairs with locals and officials.
NORTH BEACH — The Square will become a Christmas-themed cocktail pop-up and then after the holidays,
Lillie Coit’s, a new restaurant named for the strong-willed benefactor of Coit Tower. That arrives this spring.
HAYES VALLEY — The FiDi’s
Meatball Bar is bringing more of its spherical meats to the masses in Hayes Valley. The new location will be a 50-seat restaurant, and plans for weekend (meatball?) brunch are in the works.
OAKLAND — Supasit Puttikaew has departed his position as chef de cuisine at San Francisco’s Hawker Fare to open his own Thai and Laotian restaurant, which will be called
Funky Elephant. Puttikaew has secured the former Doughnut Dolly space for the project — the doughnut shop shut down in March.
WALNUT CREEK —
Gott’s Roadside, the Napa-founded burger chain, is pulling into Walnut Creek at 1275 South Main Street, as announced some time ago. Now the opening date, “early December,” draws near.

Bourbon Highway is taking taking a new road in the former Library on Main Space in Walnut Creek. The new restaurant is opening with a country theme and live music plus comfort food and brown liquors by the end of the month.
Ici Ice Creamis expanding from the Elmwood neighborhood into downtown Berkeley, taking a spot at 2079 University Avenue. Owner Mary Canales, a former pastry chef at Chez Panisse, is known for her use of local, organic ingredients, and her second location will open later this month.
PETALUMA — San Diego’s Patio Restaurant Group is moving north with a location in Petaluma, a chicken-centric restaurant to be called
Chicken Pharm. It opens this month at 132 Keller Street in the former Tuttle Drug Store, hence the “pharm” of the name.
Café Reveille is coming to Berkeley’s Fourth Street, marking the fifth location of the SF coffee chain. Beyond coffee, it will have a full menu and kitchen, plus a 700-square-foot enclosed outdoor patio.
OUTER SUNSET — A cocktail bar from surfer Matt Lopez and Carlos Yturria, co-owner of The Treasury, will open in November at 46th Street and Taraval. It’s called

SOMA — The Deli Board is expanding its immense, meaty sandwich-making operation to the former location of Fenix, on Mission St. It’ll be a larger space, where owner Adam Mesnick says he’ll test a rotating menu of experimental sandwiches. It’s projected to open in January 2018.
HAYES VALLEY — Wise Sons will officially open its Hayes Valley location on October 31. It’s a small space, but will open seven days a week for bagels, pastrami sandwiches, and Stumptown Coffee.
OAKLAND — Zys_Oakland won’t be open til fall of 2018 if all goes well. When it does, it’ll be an upscale, vegetarian restaurant with inclusive hiring practices (with a focus on the formerly incarcerated). Stay tuned for more as it nails down a location and chef.
MISSION — Beloved Valencia brunch spot
Boogaloos, billed as a pop-up but essentially permanent, was closed by a massive rent hike two years ago and a fire that caused interior damage. But it will return, Mission Local has learned.
