The Chicago Bears held their first practice on Friday and it wasn’t open to the public, but the media was allowed access. In typical Bears’ fashion the traditional media members are restricted from reporting on certain things, but there’s still plenty of news to sort through today.

Our own Robert Zeglinski is also the Bears beat reporter for the Rock River Times, so you need to checkout his full notebook from today.

First round draft pick Roquan Smith is still without a contract, so he was absent. “Roquan’s a great kid and a great football player,” Nagy said via the Rock River Times, “and he’ll be here when he’s ready.” Also missing today was inside linebacker Danny Trevathan (hamstring), cornerback/special team captain Sherrick McManis (hamstring), and wide out Josh Bellamy (strep throat). The hammy injuries are nothing serious according to Nagy.

As for the actual practice, the team stayed on the field at Olivet Nazarene University even though it was pouring at times. After practice some players remarked that had this been last year, they would have went inside for practice. I love the idea of practicing in weather that they will likely see during the season, so that’s another plus in the Nagy column in my opinion.

General Manager Ryan Pace had a Q&A earlier today on Instagram and he said that tight end Dion Sims is one of the most improved players on the team, that he has high expectations for Leonard Floyd, and that Allen Robinson looks really good so far.

Now to a few Tweets about the practice.

Kevin Toliver had a big day with several picks of Bears QB’s.

Nagy said he liked seeing how his passers tried to adjust to the rain. He likes the offensive and defensive back and forth.
