Jeremy Corbyn has demanded Donald Trump's first visit to the UK as president be cancelled over his trade war and the US treatment of child refugees.

The Labour leader said he would never have invited Mr Trump to Britain at all and mocked the Prime Minister for already 'downgrading' the visit.

Mr Corbyn, who is in Jordan today visiting a refugee camp, said there was now 'ample reason' for the Prime Minister to cancel it outright.

Mr Trump is due to fly into Britain following next month's Nato summit in Brussels. He will have talks with Theresa May and is expected to meet the Queen - though it is not the full state visit he was promised last year.

He told Sky News: 'I did not invite him, the Prime Minister did. It's been downgraded time and time again from a state visit to an official visit to a visit.

'I'm not sure what he is going to do on his brief time in the UK.

'Donald Trump needs to understand that declaring a trade war by putting tariffs on aluminium and steel and then building up tit for tat series of retaliations in which the United States retreats in on itself and starts a trade war with the rest of the world is going in a very bad and dangerous direction.

He added: 'I would not have invited him and the Prime Minister has ample reason to with hold the invitation.

'We need to say to Donald Trump we live in a multi cultural society and we are proud of it. Get over it and start living in one yourself.'

Calling for even next month's working visit to be cancelled is a significant hardening of Labour's position.

As recently as Wednesday, a spokesman for the Labour leader said Mr Corbyn was content with the July 13 trip and would be happy to meet the US President.

Shoppers are facing higher prices on jeans, bourbon, orange juice and peanut butter as Theresa May backed EU trade reprisals against the US that come into force today.

Brussels has slapped higher duties on around £2.5billion of typical American products in retaliation for Mr Trump's decision to impose tariffs of 25 per cent on steel and 10 per cent on aluminium.

But the spat is on the verge of erupting into a full-blown trade war this afternoon after the US president vowed to hit car imports with a 20 per cent tax.

The dramatic escalation could potentially deal a devastating blow to the UK, as 15 per cent of all car exports end up in the US.

Mr Trump has also faced international condemnation for detention camps on the southern US border holding children separated from their families.
