TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) --

A Kansas Dept. of Transportation worker was mowing the lawn alongside I-70 Wednesday when his tractor crashed into a ditch.

The employee, who was not identified, only suffered minor bumps and bruises in the incident, however he was taken to the hospital, according to a KDOT spokesperson.

The agency said he was mowing the I-70 right of way near West Union Rd. when his tractor dropped into a drainage structure.

Even with temperatures in the mid-20's, KDOT says it will mow the lawns that need it "regardless of the time of year."

"This area must have needed it or they wouldn't have selected it as an area to mow at this time of year," KDOT spokesperson Nicole Randall told 13 NEWS.

KDOT is still investigating the circumstances surrounding the wreck, which they say is unknown at this time.
